PRE-KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM
Prospect is a community host site for a Wilson County School Pre-Kindergarten classroom. Wilson County Schools and Mid-Cumberland Head Start provide all aspects necessary to run the program including the classroom teacher, an educational assistant, materials, supplies, equipment, furniture, and food for the students. WCS has established a playground area and provided playground equipment. Prospect provides the space for the classroom and breakroom access for the teachers.
Being a Pre-K host site assists the Prospect Child Development/Early Intervention Program meet its long term strategic plan goals:
- Generate and implement leading-edge research
- Expand Early Intervention services to additional areas of need
- Develop and implement a training program for professionals to aid in identification and assistance to children in need of services
Pre-K is accessible to all 4-year olds, with an emphasis on at-risk students and high priority communities. One of the eligibility requirements of the Pre-K program is the families' economic status. Families that are eligible for the free and reduce lunch program are automatically eligible. There are other at risk criteria that qualify children: students with disabilities, English as a second language students, students in state custody or those educationally at-risk for failure, children with a parent in the military, children of teen parents, parents with limited education or grandparents raising grandchildren, and other risk factors as determined by the school board and the Pre-K advisory council. The Pre-K classroom can have up to 20 students. The students follow the school system’s calendar schedule.
